4 more important questions then did he or not left the ship – Costa Concordia

100 years after the Titanic, we have another naval disaster, Costa Concorida.  All my condolences to the family off the victims.

This blog is not to support the captain, as I don’t have all the details off the tragedy, and this is just the reason why I write this blogpost.   The media…. They also don’t have all the facts…. It’s difficult to find some serious information on the tragedy, the only thing we hear is ‘The Captain has left the ship’  and the people are furious.  He is a ‘Coward’…  Emotional.

My first reactions are ‘Strange he left the ship so early, did all his officers followed him?  Did a second in command left also, the third in command, the Mate etc?

And then I started to ask even more questions., what happened before the crash?
- A captain is like a CEO, it is not him who is navigating the ship, it is the Mate.A captain commands (and take responsibility).  So what happened before?¨    (I was reading that the captain had dinner with a beautiful blond girl, so if this was thrue, he was not on the bridge , so he couldn’t navigate himself.)
- This kind off cruise-ships have also several navigators, did they all make the mistake not to see the rocks before hand?
- The CEO off the mother company explained that the route is carefully calculated and an alarm system went off because the ship went off-course. The alarm went off at what time?      If it was after hitting rocks, it was normal as the captain had to take decisions to move the ship.  If it was before hitting the rocks, what is the use off the alarm system when no procedures are in place afterwards.  Did the mother company, who told the alarm went off, checked immediately with the captain what is happening?

The ship lies very close to the shore, impressive images, but the ship was not navigating so close.  It was after hitting the rock formation, the captain gave instructions to turn direction off the land.  I am sure this would have helped to save many lives.  Next to where the ship is lying, you will find an underwater  ravine (reason why already 2-3 times the rescue actions where stopped). In case the ships would have sunk over there, more people would have been death and it would be look more like the Titanic catastrophe.

So all these questions will be (hopefully) answered when the trial starts, but sadly the emotions off people is more important than finding facts off what really happened.
All above questions are for me more important to see if the captain made serious mistakes but sadly enough the media is not going into the facts.  Beautiful examples are Promoting a animation off a Korean Company (it is not a game), Interviewing people who where not even on the ship or the island etc.

About Frederik Van Lierde

I was born in 1974 so I consider myself still as a young entrepreneur. I started to sell at the age of 12, when my father had Open-Door days. I was selling the garden furniture stock. My grandfather Eduard Van Lierde always told me that if you work hard you can reach everything you want. Ever since, his thought is with me. One day my father came home with an IBM PS2 computer. I remember the argue between my parents as in that time those home computers where very expensive. From that moment on the IT virus hit me. When my father sold the company, I decided to move my studies to IT. After graduating, I started as an employee for an international company but very soon I found out that being an ‘employee’ was not my future or goal. Thanks to a very good friend, I received my first position as IT manager at the age of 24. Meanwhile I created a Point-of-Sales system and sold it all over Europe. Many business challenges came, some stayed and some are gone. Every adventure was a success, not always money wise but I learned from every situation and used the experience in the next one. I am very proud of the partners I can work with. It is not always easy to find the right people, but I guess I am a lucky man. (Even from the ‘bad’ partners I learned something: ‘how not to do it’) You can only reach your goals when you have the right people to help you! The journey isn’t finished, many ideas and challenges will come and I will post regularly about it on Twitter, this blog and in many other ways.
